Over the summer of 2016 I experienced a lot of loss: loss of friends, lovers, black bodies. Summer’s Mourning aims to describe the pain and anguish felt amid this loss--to function as a sartorial epitaph for that summer. In tribute to summer’s beauty--black beauty--the garments & silhouettes will draw inspiration from dark foliage, and carry a lightweight so they sway like the summer’s leaves. This collection is all together informed by the rich blackness in the paintings of Kerry James Marshall, the softness of lace and silks, and the bouquets at the funeral of Mike Brown, Korryn Gaines, and others.
